In the present WoW game they would hardly be a blip in your leveling journey, but for the old timers both of these locations were at which WoW actually began to open up (at least for human, wow classic gold and orc/troll gamers ). Rather, you were thrown into a broad open area and reliable to research that’world’ you’d heard so much about.
We logged in to Westfall just as the demonstration began, and also the sense of confusion amongst the player-base was palpable. In Vintage there aren’t any mini-map markers letting you know the locations of quest-givers, and just the slow-scrolling quest text to indicate where to find the enemies you’ve been asked to look after.
For many, this absolute lack of leadership was overwhelming. The worldwide chat was a twisted mess of players asking where to find gnolls and bandits, together with many picking a random direction from the quest hub and striking out to learn more about the region, hoping to get lucky and happen upon the ideal sort of enemy.
The encounter was conspicuous when we logged on the Horde side to check out the sprawling savanna of the Barrens. In present WoW, the zone was divided into two considerably more manageable chunks, but in Vintage it’s difficult not to feel intimidated by the sheer size of the area.
Without a mount to speed up our journey, and no markers telling us where to go, we had been left to meander around the huge expanse, sometimes stumbling upon the raptors along with tallstriders we had been asked to take care of. We’d been here plenty of times in the years since Vanilla, and knew the lay of this property, but with no instructions to guide us we felt ourselves undergoing the Barrens because we did 14 years back. The world suddenly felt large, and scary, and we were thirsty for more.
